The Embodied Image: Imagination and Imagery in Architecture
These are brave journeys into terra incognita. If you simply have a deep interest in architecture, whether you are an architect or not, this book like Mr. In The Emodied Image, author Pallasmaa takes on the task of returning the image to its roots in imagination. As visual artists, photographers, architects, and professional designers, many of us are conditioned to automatically assume that the word image means visual image. In previous books, Mr. Pallasmaa has argued for the acknowledgement of a more physical, sensory involvement with architecture.

This interest emerged 15 years ago in my critique of the hegemony of vision and the neglected architectural potential of the other senses, entitled The Eyes of the Skin. This investigation was expanded in The Thinking Hand to a study on the significance of the eye-hand-mind connection, regrettably undervalued in the pedagogical and professional practices of the computer age. This past week an event occurred which hardly caused most to raise an eyebrow, but in the literary world resounded like a sonic boom— the announcement that Encyclopedia Britannica would no longer be running their print edition for the first time in their year history. I make this observation ironically while writing a book review to be published online, but for me—in particular—hearing about the closing of the printing presses of the Mother Ship of Encyclopedias appears as nothing short of the start of a new Dark Age.
